PDO “Protected Designation of Origin” or DOP “Denominazione di Origine Protetta” in Italy.
The PDO/DOP is the European certification scheme (Regulation 510/06) for an agricultural product or food whose entire production cycle, from the raw material to the final product (processing and packaging), is transferred to a given area. The combination of natural factors (raw materials, environmental characteristics and location) and human (production and traditional crafts), make the product unique and cannot be reproduced elsewhere and the PDO/DOP logo certifies it worldwide. Production rules are stricter to ensure maximum quality than others.
PGI “Protected Geographical Indication” or IGP “Indicazione Geografica Protetta” in Italy.
The PGI / IGP is the European Certification Scheme (Regulation 501/06) for an agricultural product or foodstuff, produced and processed in a specific geographical area. The connection to the geographic reference area may also be limited to a single production phase (raw material production and / or olive processing). The special logo is coming to confirm this.
Complies with the method of production governed by community regulation EC Regulation 834/07. In order for olive oil products to be Organic (BIO) certified by the European Union, it must be a product of organic farming that combines optimal environmental practices, a high level of biodiversity and conservation of natural resources. Organic farmers in the European Union are obliged to respect the health of soil, water, trees and animals, while making responsible use of energy and natural resources. Organic farmers and processors must comply with strict EU requirements with regular inspections carried out at each stage of the biological / organic (BIO) chain in order to use the organic logo on their products, attract more customers and increase their business.
